2001 Conference

Penalosa Draws Hundreds! 

The second Break The Gridlock conference was held on September 29, 2001 at Pulaski Park, 1419 W. Blackhawk. 

Speakers:

  • Former Bogota (Colombia) Mayor Enrique Penalosa
    Penalosa instituted the annual Car-Free Day event in Bogota.
  • Milwaukee Planner Brian O'Connell discussed the depaving a downtown expressway.
  • Toronto architect Jacob Allderdice unveiled his design for a car-free Grant Park
  • Jan Lundberg, founder of the Alliance for a Paving Moratorium described the depaving movement.
  • Alderman Mary Ann Smith, 48th Ward
  • Alderman Gene Schulter, 47th Ward;
  • Ben Gomberg, Bicycle Coordinator, City of Chicago
  • Jeff Sriver, Transportation Research Board, Committee on Pedestrians

During the event, a plan for a car-free design of Grant Park was unveiled.  This plan will be presented to city officials as an alternative to the proposed parking structures to be built at Grant Park.

Additionally, those involved with various grass roots efforts within the Chicago community will make presentations about their progress towards a a car-lighter Chicago.
